My weekend was spent mostly in tears, followed by much rejoicing. Our 13-year-old black Lab picked Friday night to run away, something he’s done before, but never to this extent. Friday night was stormy, and we live on three acres of woods, so finding him was nearly impossible. My husband hiked and drove and searched for hours Friday night and Saturday, to no avail. He’s had that dog longer than we’ve been married and always joked that if we ever got divorced, all he wanted was the dog. He’s like a child to us. We were beside ourselves with grief, thinking he was never coming back. For a 13-year-old dog he’s in relatively good health, but he has arthitis and needs daily medication to manage seizures. I kept imagining all the horrible possibilities.
Then, Sunday morning the phone rang. God bless the woman on the other end of the phone, who’d found Maverick camped out on her porch. Apparently he’d been there since Saturday and just wouldn’t leave. He’s tired and sore, but none the worse for wear. Thanks goodness for small miracles. It’s a reminder of how fast your world can change, from joy to sadness and back again. So give your favorite furry friend an extra hug tonight, from me.

Two days before this last Christmas I had to put my 16-year-old precious poodle down. Lucy. "Lovely Lucy" my Aunt use to call her.
I so understand that gut-wrenching feeling when it comes to losing a pet - or thinking maybe you had.
I had several scares with Lucy. But every time it reinforced how blessed I was to have her in my life - and I always made special "Lucy time."
I have no regrets. We spent a lot of quality time together.
But I do miss snuggling up next to her little body of charcoal grey hair. Yes, poodles have hair! Soft and wonderfully hypo-allergenic.
So, HUG AWAY I say! Fur and hair and all! It's the best medicine for you and them! Thanks, Nora!
