“This is an amazing and exhausting place to be,” says Shelley, principal of Johnson Street Global Studies in High Point. The K-8 school incorporates global experiences into every facet of the education process. Each grade level is required to study two countries a year and take at least one field trip per quarter. The middle school students are also learning Japanese and participating in an online exchange with a middle school in China. Shelley visited China as part of the program and hopes to send more teachers abroad. “When you go abroad, especially when it’s so different from where you live, it’s just amazing how things change for you,” she says. For many of Shelley’s students, High Point is the only world they’ve ever known. “That’s why I push field trips. Experiences lead to knowledge, and I want them to love to learn.”
