I always have a hard time when people ask me to describe skirt! Sure, it’s a women’s magazine, but it’s so completely different than other women’s magazine’s out there, I hesitate to use that phrase. I had never seen skirt! until right before I applied for this job, but it was love at first sight. Skirt! reaches women at their core, stripping away the hard candy shell and going straight for the chocolate center. Skirt! is for women, by women, which is what makes it so personal. It doesn’t talk down or try to categorize, it accepts women for who they are.
The first issue I read contained an essay from Charlotte editor Aleigh that dealt with body and food issues. Hers were on the opposite end of the spectrum from mine, but I could relate to her views all the same. Had this been any other magazine, the essay would have featured a 67-pound skeleton and a fake name. Skirt! keeps it real. Always.
I had a discussion this morning with a woman who asked the target age range for skirt! readers. I told her it was 19 to 90. Honestly, women of any age can find something to love about skirt!, whether it’s skirt! Loves or the F-Word feature. Age, as I’m not the first to say, is merely a state of mind.
The best way I know to describe skirt! is that it recognizes that women can be feminists and still be feminine. I’m proud to be a college-educated working mom, but I also want to indulge my obsession with beauty products. Skirt! nourishes both sides of me. No matter their age, weight, race or income, skirt! readers have something in common -- we are modern, thinking women with our heads in the clouds and our feet on the ground.
